Many of us began this year with the theme of perfect vision. We had hopes of God revealing His perfect will for us. We wanted to gain His perspective on life. We imagined Him conceiving a great work within us that would bless others.
Maybe you dreamt of 2020 being the year you finally saw that big dream come into focus. But the pandemic hit, racial injustice was brought to the forefront, and this crazy election that we're still enduring brought even more division. Maybe as you stand on the cusp of the end of 2020 you feel as though all those hopes and dreams you had at the beginning are long lost.
I'd like to purpose a different point of view. What if God has indeed answered our prayers for perfect vision? In the midst of us wearing masks and crying out for equality, what if God was giving us His perfect vision of our world?
What if, through this terrible pandemic, God was unmasking our idols? When restaurants, bars, and stores closed, and sports teams were sidelined; what if God was showing us the idol of gluttony?
"Do not associate with heavy drinkers of wine, or with gluttonous eaters of meat. For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty. And the drowsiness [of overindulgence] will clothe one with rags." Proverbs 23:20-21 AMP
Overindulgence in food, alcohol, retail therapy, or sporting events displaces God from the throne of our lives and become idols we need to rid ourselves of.
"You shall not make for yourself an idol [as an object to worship] or any likeness (form, manifestation) of what is in heaven above or the earth beneath or in the water under the earth." Deuteronomy 5:8 AMP
Let's face it, we worship many things in this world. When they were stripped away God gave us perfect vision into the state of our hearts.
What if through the deaths of Breanna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd God was unmasking our blatant disregard of the sanctity of life? What if He was bringing into focus the sins of favoritism, inequality, and outright hatred?
"Then God said, 'Let us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness [not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness]...So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them." Genesis 1:26-27 AMP
"My fellow believers, do not practice your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of partiality [toward people - show no favoritism, no prejudice, no snobbery]." James 2:1 AMP
"And as we no longer see each other in our former state - Jew or non-Jew, rich or poor, male or female - because we're all one through our union with Jesus Christ with no distinction between us." Galatians 3:28 TPT
"Let the inner movement of your heart always be to love one another, and never play the role of an actor wearing a mask. Despise evil and embrace everything that is good and virtuous." Romans 12:9 TPT
"For the whole Law [concerning human relationships] is fulfilled in one precept 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF [that is, you shall have an unselfish concern for others and do things for their benefit]." Galatians 5:14 AMP (emphasis added)
We are selfish people. We are taught from an early age to look out for number one and if someone is different from us they must be evil. By allowing racial tensions to rise God brought into focus the wrong mindsets entrenched in our society.
As the pandemic lingered, protests heated up, and the election drew nigh, our nation experienced a division I haven't seen in my adult life. Both Presidential candidates launched political ads demeaning the other. Here in Georgia we are still enduring ads that are negative in nature. And our nation is enduring the rants of a President who won't let go and bow out graciously. What if, through all of this political unrest, God is sharpening our understanding that He is sovereign over all powers?
"Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God [granted by His permission and sanction], and those which exist have been put in place by God." Romans 13:1 AMP
"He controls the course of world events; He removes kings and sets up other kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars." Daniel 2:21 NLT
In our day to day lives it's easy to forget that God is in control of world events. We get so focused on our own agendas, we don't pay attention to the workings of our political system. With the ugliness of this election God shined the spotlight on the fact that we have placed our trust in political leaders instead of Him. We have allowed politics to displace Him and our world has suffered because we have.
What if, through the events of 2020 God has unmasked the sin of idolatry? What if He has brought into focus His desire to rule over our lives, homes, nation, and world? What if He has shared His perfect vision of what He sees when he looks at our world?
What do we need to change as we walk into 2021?
Father God, Come unmask those things that keep me from sharing Your perfect vision for my life, my home, my community, my nation, and this world.
Spirit, As sins are unmasked, cause me to quickly turn from them, quickly confess them, and quickly bring myself into alignment with You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Until next time,
Keep gathering manna, growing deeper, and gaining intimacy.
God bless and keep you,
