Whew! This year.
How are you?
We only have a few more weeks left in this year of upheaval.
Those weeks include an election of monumental importance.
Unfortunately, people on both sides are threatening unrest if their candidate doesn't win.
Our nation needs healing. So much healing.
But healing can only come if we turn to God.
Let's pray for God to come down, touch our hearts, and heal our land.
You are sovereign over all things. Before this year even was, You already knew all the pain, all the frustration, all the heartache, all ugliness; everything that would happen.
You already knew because You were already here. You are the God of heaven and earth. you have no time restraints. A day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a day in Your eternal sight. Thank You for Your incomprehensible largeness. Thank You that You are in charge of all things in heaven and on earth and under the earth. You are even in charge of this crazy year.
The pandemic, racial injustice, political disagreements. It's all taking its toll on us.
Our hearts hurt.
Like the Psalmist we cry out:
"My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be..." (Psalm 42:4a NLT)
Life is forever changed.
Change is hard. Especially change that wasn't wanted. Sickness has taken many lives. Families were left to grieve alone. Spirit of Comfort, We ask for You to touch their hearts. Heal their pain. Especially as another holiday season rolls around and they face an empty chair at their table. Hold them tightly. Enable them to feel Your mighty, loving presence with them.
Change is also good, when it is a change that has needed to take place for decades and beyond. As we look into the eyes of those different from us, take away the blinders. Open our eyes to see; really see, each other. Enable us to behold Your image in each other. Cause us to see the beauty in the different skin colors, eye colors, and hair colors You have given us. Thank You, Lord, for not making us all the same, carbon copies of one another! Thank You for making each and every one of us unique.
Prince of Peace,
Come with Your peace and sweep over this great land. Remind us that every person; regardless of the color of their skin, regardless of their social status or political affiliation; every single person is deserving of love and respect because we are all made in Your image...whether someone realizes it or not. And Spirit of God, Give those of us who do realize, who are called by Your name, the good sense to love everyone. Remind us of the story You told of the Good Samaritan; who, even though the person he saw hurt and bleeding on the road was his enemy, still stopped and helped him. Remind us that we are to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Remind us that Jesus told us we should be known by our love. Help us to love.
As we face a major election, we pray for Your will to be done here on earth, in our country, as it is in heaven. Remind us of the words of Daniel:
"Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are His. He changes times and seasons; He deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning." (Daniel 2:20-21 NIV)
This has certainly been a year of changing times and seasons. Thank You that You are in charge of it all. Thank You that You already know the outcome of this election. May we rest in Your choice knowing that You are the One who places people in positions of power for Your purposes. And Lord, No matter what the outcome of this election, no matter who sits in the White House come January, enable us to be civil to one another. We ask for a peaceful transition. We ask for quiet rest from upheaval. We ask for accepting spirits and for loving hearts.
We need Your balm. We need Your healing touch throughout our country. Healing for our bodies; some still fighting COVID-19. Healing for our minds, some tormented by memories of injustice. Healing for our emotions, some so frustrated they have turned to violence. Healing for our hearts, some so broken they can't see any way out of the pain. Healing for our souls, some so deep in darkness they don't even know there is Light.
We cry out with Jeremiah from ancient days:
"O Lord, if You heal me, I will be truly healed; if You save me, I will be truly saved. My praises are for You alone!" (Jeremiah 17:14 NLT)
And we repeat the words You gave Malachi, reminding You of Your promise for healing when we fear Your name:
"But for you who fear My name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in His wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture."
(Malachi 4:2 NLT)
Sun of Righteousness,
Rise upon us with healing in Your wings. Set us free from the brokenness of this year. And may we leap into 2021 with Your joy as our strength.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
