One of my favorite study techniques is to make two lists as I read through a passage. One list is titled "What God is/does" and the other "What I am/do". Making these lists helps me realize how much of my being made holy is God's work. In many passages, the list for what God is or does is long while the list for what I do has only one or two things listed. Paul told Timothy:
"For He delivered us and saved us and called us with a holy calling [a calling that leads to a consecrated life - a life set apart - a life of purpose], not because of our works [or because of any personal merit - we could do nothing to earn this], but because of His own purpose and grace [His amazing, undeserved favor] which He granted to us in Christ Jesus before the world began [eternal ages ago]." 2 Timothy 1:9 AMP
Psalm 86 is a prayer to God. So let's apply my study technique to this Psalm.
What God is/does:
hear great turn to me
answer marvelous deeds show His
guard teach strength on my
have mercy faithful behalf
bring joy give an undivided heart save me
forgiving great love give sign of
good deliver from depths His goodness
abounding in love compassionate help
listen gracious comfort
incomparable deeds slow to anger
What I am/do:
faithful to God
trust in God
call to God
cry for mercy
worship before God
bring glory to God's name
rely on God's faithfulness
fear God's name
praise God with whole heart
glorify God's name
We can be thankful that the work is God's.
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God." Ephesians 2:8
We can be thankful that God hears us when we cry to Him.
"And we are confident that He hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases Him."
1 John 5:14
We can be thankful that God is incomparable.
"Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like Me." Isaiah 46:9
We can be thankful that God turns to us when we call to Him.
"Come close to God and God will come close to you." James 4:8a
We can be thankful that God shows Himself strong on our behalf.
"The Sovereign Lord is my strength! He makes me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights." Habakkuk 3:19
We can be thankful that God helps and comforts us.
"But the Lord stood beside me and gave me strength." 2 Timothy 4:17a
"He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God gives us." 1 Corinthians 1:4
Gathered manna for Psalm 86 is:
God does the work of changing our hearts when we fear His name.
When have you cried out to God for help? How did He show Himself strong on your behalf? Where do you need a changed heart? How will you allow God to do that work in you?
Praying we all fear God's name and allow Him to work in and through us.
Until next time keep gathering manna, growing deeper, and gaining intimacy!
May God bless and keep you,
